I’ve created a detailed breakdown of the first hour of Silent Hill 2 (2001), focusing on how narrative and gameplay elements are introduced and developed. This project was part of a Narrative Design and Game Scriptwriting assignment, where the goal was to analyze a story-driven game and build a structured information map of its early storytelling.
To complete the task, I watched a no-commentary playthrough and carefully documented all the facts and narrative beats presented in the opening hour. These facts were categorized and prioritized to understand how the game communicates story through interaction, environment, and cinematic elements.
The breakdown was organized as follows:
Gameplay – Mechanics, objectives, controls, systems the player learns or uses
Plot – Key narrative events, especially setups and payoffs
Setting – Environmental storytelling, worldbuilding, and tone
Characters – Introductions, dialogue, behaviors, and implied relationships
